Bali Institute is a global education organization providing high-impact, inspiring learning opportunities in Bali, Indonesia to universities across the U.S. and beyond. Alongside a university’s faculty leader, we co-design powerful programs for their students to explore the intersection of Bali’s rich culture with a focused area of study, whether it be environmental sustainability, global health and wellness, social entrepreneurship, the arts, or anything in between. Each program is custom-designed to include the perfect balance of classroom time, sitevisits, case studies, and cultural activities, allowing students to deepen their understanding of class topics through the lens of Balinese culture and society.
Over the last 15 years, thousands of students have participated in our 2-5 week faculty-led university programs. We have created programs in partnership with prestigious universities including University of California, Irvine; Northeastern University; University ofArizona; Florida State University; University of Arkansas; and many others. We want both faculty members and their students to be fully present and at ease in Bali, ready to welcome each new experience. That’s why a team of Bali Institute coordinators joins each program 24/7 to manage all program logistics— accommodation, transportation, meals, activities, health and safety— we’ve got it covered.
Experiential learning is a passion of ours at Bali Institute because it invites students to lean into their curiosity and to explore the world and themselves in new ways. We have seen firsthand how empowering experiences abroad can propel students toward making positive impacts in their own communities back home. Through visits to inspiring organizations, service projects, and responsible travel practices, we strive to ensure that our university programs have a positive impact on students AND on Bali’s people, culture, and environment. Our mission comes to life when we see the impact of our programs ripple out from one small island to students all over the world.

Bali Institute's role is planning a custom educational itinerary collaboratively with you— we work with you to plan visits and activities with individuals and organizations from our vast network in Bali that are working on issues relevant to your class– whether it’s marine conservation, public health, the arts, psychology, social entrepreneurship, or anything in between. In addition, we organize the pre-program logistics (registration, payment, special requests) and on-the-ground coordination for your group (accommodation, transportation, activities, and meals). We also provide an English-speaking coordination team that joins your program 24/7 from start to finish to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Whether you are new to creating a study abroad program at your institution or a seasoned study abroad veteran, we are happy to help you to complete the necessary materials to submit a program application, complete a location risk assessment, or any other paperwork necessary to get your program off the ground.
In addition to collaborating with us on your program itinerary and planning your course materials, your role is to market the program and recruit students from your institution to sign up to join you for the adventure!
We can create a program for almost any field of study in Bali. In the past we've run programs on public health, social entrepreneurship, business, environmental studies, leadership studies, psychology, the arts, marine biology, indigenous studies, and more. We have a wonderful network in Bali of community leaders, organizations, entrepreneurs, and artists who can speak on a wide range of topics. We have also developed many great experiential activities with the people and organizations in our network.
We organize activities, speakers, and excursions that complement your coursework, so choosing the activities for your program is a collaborative effort. For example, if your program is focused on environmental conservation, we would organize environmental speakers from Indonesia, snorkeling over Bali's reefs, visits to coral restoration projects, and more. If your expertise is in entrepreneurship, we would organize visits with local entrepreneurs, activities with small businesses, talks with investors, and exchanges with local leaders.
We are also sure to include activities that give a window into local Balinese culture such as dance and music lessons, cooking classes, visits with local artists, walks or bike rides through the rice paddies, and guided visits to local temples. These activities deepen students’ understanding of Balinese culture and add another layer of context to the main theme of the program.
Before the start of the program, Bali Institute handles student registration for the program in partnership with your institution, ensuring that we have all of the information needed to support you and your student group before you arrive in Bali. We are also able to manage payments for the program or for special requests (such as single rooms or early arrivals) if needed.
Bali Institute books all accommodation as well as all transportation to/from program activities, between program locations, and to/from the airport. We also organize all program activities and group meals (as many as you would like included in the program).
Bali Institute also provides an English-speaking coordination team that joins your program 24/7 from start to finish. They ensure that your group knows what to expect each day, facilitate smooth transitions between activities, and help troubleshoot any issues that arise along the way. Our coordination team is also trained to handle any emergency situations that come up, and know how to manage the situation while also continuing to support the rest of the group.
Bali Institute also holds general liability insurance coverage of $1 million, so you can be at ease that any situation that might arise on a program would be handled quickly and effectively.
In general Bali is a very safe location for travel. Although the chance of any safety issues is low, we recommend that participants go out in groups during free time, double check your belongings whenever getting out of a vehicle or leaving a restaurant or activity, bringing bags that securely close with zippers, and keep any jewelry, expensive cameras, or electronic equipment (including smart phones) either in your room or securely stowed in your bag when visiting busy areas. We also remind participants to be very aware when walking on the roads and sidewalks, as there is a lot of traffic in some areas.
Bali Institute has relationships with medical facilities in every location you will travel to while in Bali. For both minor ailments and for emergencies, a member of our team would accompany the ill person to the nearest facility and work closely with the medical personnel to make sure they are receiving appropriate care. In the event that an ill participant needs care outside of the scope of what is available at the facility, we would have the person transferred to one of our preferred larger hospitals in south Bali.
Our team has a genuine care for the well being of Bali's people, culture, and environment. We strive to ensure that our programs have a positive impact on everyone involved— meaning BOTH students and the local Balinese community. That’s why we have painstakingly vetted service projects in which students can truly make an impact on some of the most pressing challenges facing Bali, such as women’s empowerment, food security, pollution, and deforestation. If you are interested in including a service component to your program, you can be assured that your students will be engaging in an ethical service project that truly benefits the local community.
