BALI SOCIAL INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP (SIE) IMMERSION:

WHAT IS THE HERO’S JOURNEY? :

• The great mythologist Joseph Campbell arrived at a thesis that all classic heroes, and all classic hero stories, regardless of time, place, or cultural origin, essentially follow a single basic pattern termed the “Monomyth” or “The Hero’s Journey.” The Hero’s Journey is the Path of Transformation.

Throughout the Bali SIE Immersion program, as a community of learners and changemakers, we’ll examine transformation at the individual, organizational, and communal levels through the lens of the Hero’s Journey in order to bring key principles of SIE to life.

We’ll explore key questions about what it means to lead through an adaptive SIE framework, offering participants the understanding, skills, tools, and mindset to realize our full leadership potential as adaptive changemakers. Through immersive experiences, engagement and experimentation, as well as deep learning and reflection, these intensive 2.5 weeks will strengthen key aspects of personal leadership that form the deepest foundation for our effectiveness as changemakers.

Within this context, the program includes—yet goes beyond—imparting an essential understanding of SIE, delving into topics such as:

• discovering purpose (our Why);
• nurturing the trust and courage to do what makes us feel most alive;
• articulating and aligning our values and vision;
• fostering grit and cultivating creativity;
• telling powerful stories;
• developing human potential and facilitating high-performing learning teams;
• bringing presence to our work & relationships;
• practicing self-inquiry and gratitude;
• questioning and releasing limiting beliefs;
• developing patterns & habits that prioritize our well-being, maximize our fulfillment, and serve our growth and best selves while inspiring & empowering others.

Together, we’ll experience an inner and outer journey that allows us to lead from our best selves, deepening our understanding and mastery of the art & science of leading an extraordinary life of impact.

WHY SIE IN BALI?

With its magnificent, forested volcanoes, iconic terraced rice fields, teeming coral reefs, and ubiquitous temples, Bali earns its nickname as the “Island of the Gods.” While its ancient Hindu culture continues to thrive, Bali is also a hotbed of impact entrepreneurship. It is at a critical turning point in its development, trying to balance tradition and modernity, cultural and environmental sustainability with equitable economic advancement. This blend of community and tradition with innovation and adaptation offers profound lessons for addressing today’s global challenges, making Bali a uniquely-fitting location to host this program.

Many inspiring social enterprises have been born out of the need to address these growing pains and to give the island’s people the opportunity to adapt and thrive. Bali Institute has developed strong relationships with many of these organizations, and they serve as excellent real-life case studies for adaptive leadership, changemaking initiatives, and SIE ecosystems.
In and amongst our workshops and discussions, we’ll weave in inspiring site visits, talks with community leaders, case studies, action research, and immersion opportunities. These dynamic experiences will provide participants with an immersive understanding of social innovation and entrepreneurship (SIE) and leading as an adaptive changemaker.

OUR APPROACH TO TEACHING AND LEARNING

Over the past two decades, the Bali Institute has been a leader in offering cross-cultural educational immersions that promote deep exploration and self-discovery. This SIE Immersion program, which is co-designed and co-led by the Bali Institute and SIE CoLab Adaptive Leadership Institute, integrates the best of their respective learning approaches (see below). Bruce—who has leveraged the power of education over the entire course of his professional career—and the Bali Institute have a long, successful history of collaborative SIE immersion programming in Bali. The original Bali SIE Immersion program they co-designed and co-led has been included in the Forum for Education Abroad’s Curriculum Toolbox as representative of best practices in education abroad. Two young Balinese leaders who are part of the Bali Institute team will join Bruce in co-leading the program.

The SIE CoLab Adaptive Leadership Institute’s approach to teaching and learning:

• We believe that everyone has limitless human potential, and we aim to cultivate and activate that potential. We see individuals as both learners and teachers and believe that everyone has the potential to be a changemaker. We empower participants to become adaptive changemakers and organizations to become spaces of deep engagement, dynamic experimentation, and adaptive innovation and leadership.
• We see participants as whole people and engaged, active, creative discoverers who jointly construct knowledge and meaning with others. We promote learning environments that value diversity of culture, perspectives, and life experiences while promoting shared values and self-discovery.
• We see learning as an active, lifelong process of engaging, facilitating, and designing ideas, experiences, and conversations in order to create new, more effective, mental models of the world.
• We take a learner-center approach, leveraging high-impact pedagogical approaches to learning such as scaffolding, immersion/experiential-based, applied/inquiry-based, leadership-oriented, and integrative and multi-dimensional learning domains.
• We help develop both critical (what works and what doesn’t?) and creative (what might be possible?) thinking as well as the knowledge and skills to translate those ideas into effective innovation (measurable, impactful change in service to a defined problem). We emphasize learning over teaching, questions over answers, ways of being over ways of knowing, and challenging our comfort zones as well as established, familiar patterns and mental models over maintaining the comfort and safety of the status quo.
• We use a case-in-point approach to teaching leadership, in which the class or organization is explored as its own social system that reflects the larger system, demonstrating in real time the theory in practice, treating every moment as a personal and/or group learning opportunity while in the midst of that exploration.

WHAT IS SOCIAL INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP (SIE)?

SIE is an emergent, transdisciplinary, adaptive framework for catalyzing, leading, and sustaining systems-level change that links technical and adaptive problem-solving; applies the best thinking, practices, and innovations from across the nonprofit/civic, private, and public sectors; and balances social, environmental, and economic value systems.

The SIE CoLab, co-founded by SIE Immersion Program Leader Bruce Manciagli, has pioneered an approach for achieving transformative change that is informed by its leading edge theoretical construct, the Adaptive SIE Framework for Systems Change. Its model offers new ways of thinking along with powerful tools, strategies, and resources that empower adaptive changemakers and engage them through SIE ecosystems in collaborative, human-centered, values-driven social innovation focused on a common purpose.

A dynamic new context has emerged from synergies between deepening patterns of interconnectivity and individual empowerment, in which everyone has the potential to engage meaningfully in the process of co-innovation and co-leadership as an adaptive changemaker; this impact is amplified through capacity-development, collaborative networks, and SIE ecosystems.

Adaptive changemakers integrate the mindsets, attributes, skills, and strategies of adaptive leaders and changemakers. Adaptive leadership is about inspiring and empowering people to leverage their capacity to lead themselves and others through difficult change, question and transform the mental models that shape our systems, collaborate to systemically address complex challenges, and cultivate the conditions for values-driven innovation and adaptation to thrive (Heifetz, Grashow, & Linsky). A changemaker is one who sees the need for change in the world; identifies an opportunity for meaningful change within a complex challenge; and works creatively, collaboratively, and relentlessly to make that change happen (Ashoka).
