Realize Your Full Potential as an Adaptive Changemaker and Become the Purpose-Driven Leader Our World Needs Today

Spend an amazing 2.5 weeks immersed in Balinese culture and engaged in deep, experiential learning about Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SIE). This program will take each participant on a journey through Bali as well as an inner journey towards becoming an empowered leader and adaptive changemaker who is uniquely equipped to address the urgent and complex challenges of the 21st century.

You’ll dig deep into Balinese culture during your first 10 days near Ubud, Bali’s cultural capital and hub for artists and innovators. You’ll visit Hindu temples and Balinese palaces, speak with visionary Balinese leaders, and meet and connect with inspiring social enterprises tackling issues including access to healthcare, food insecurity, food waste, women’s empowerment and education, and environmental sustainability.

Your journey continues to the northeast ocean village of Amed where you will spend 4 nights staying beachside, snorkeling, and visiting a remote social enterprise focused on production of a special variety of palm sugar native to this region. You’ll also have the chance to slow down a bit and digest all that you’ve learned, discussed, and experienced so far in the program.

The final 4 nights of the program will be spent in Sanur, a seaside town in southeast Bali made up of a long stretch of picturesque beach with calm, shallow waters. On the drive to Sanur you’ll stop for a breathtaking hike that ends in a village that is still home to the indigenous people of Bali. While in Sanur you’ll meet with one more social enterprise as well as an investment group that helps to fund social entrepreneurship endeavors. There will also be time during these final days to process and engage with all of the experiences and knowledge you have taken in throughout the program, as well as to reflect on the transformation that you have gone through in the process. While we will “wrap up” the program, the end of this journey is also your first step towards bringing SIE to life back in your home community.

the program, I have begun making monumental shifts on my “Hero’s Journey” and have
been following my bliss/calling to pursue my creative and big dreams.”

About the Program Leader, Bruce Manciagli

Bruce Manciagli is Co-Founder of the SIE CoLab, a hybrid social enterprise specializing in collaborating with forward-thinking client-partners seeking to achieve “transformation readiness” and become catalysts and facilitators of sustainable impact, providing them with the scaffolding to build SIE Ecosystems that encompass the hardware, software, and operating system for transformative change.

Bruce’s career has focused on developing the capacity of individuals, organizations, and communities to more effectively address social and environmental challenges and catalyze system transformation. His work in Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship (SIE)—spanning local, state, and international contexts—includes co-founding social enterprises (one of them a national award winner); helping to strengthen and scale a statewide network of high- impact

nonprofits; facilitating and funding cross-sector/collective impact partnerships; cultivating SIE ecosystems in higher education and in Indonesia; and leading social innovation initiatives across a diversity of issues, from education to trauma and from civic engagement and youth leadership to fair trade and the environment. Bruce has raised millions and granted tens of millions of dollars to engage communities in creating lasting social value. As Social Entrepreneur in Residence in Florida State University’s (FSU) College of Social Sciences & Public Policy (Interdisciplinary Social Science Program), an affiliated faculty member in FSU’s Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship, and Director of SIE@FSU for seven years, he served as lead architect of FSU’s SIE ecosystem. Based on decades of practice and study in the field of SIE, he articulated and developed the Adaptive SIE Framework for Systems Change, which provides the theoretical framework for the SIE CoLab’s model.

Bruce’s academic training and professional experience are rooted in social innovation & entrepreneurship, international & community development, political theory &
interdisciplinary social sciences, and the social foundations of education. It is the latter that compels him to place as much emphasis on how and why people learn as what they learn. He was awarded an FSU Transformation Through Teaching Award in 2017 and a University Teaching Award in 2019.

Bruce has long-standing ties to Indonesia. He grew up overseas, living 18 years across five continents, and first visited Bali as a young boy in 1975—its people, landscape, and culture captivated him. After graduating from Princeton University in 1988, he lived in Salatiga, Java for one year, teaching at Satya Wacana University and exploring this vast archipelago. It was at Satya Wacana that he met his wife, who is from the island of Sumba, where they were married in a traditional ceremony and where his family makes regular trips. Their daughter, who recently graduated from Duke and currently works with Storycraft Lab based in Washington DC, is very close with all of her cousins in Indonesia. In partnership with the Bali Institute, he developed and led FSU’s Bali Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship Immersion program, which has been included in the Forum for Education Abroad’s Curriculum Toolbox as representative of best practices in education abroad. In 2019, he partnered with the Bali Institute to prototype and launch the Indonesia Changemakers Fellowship, which helped lay the foundation for the Bali Institute’s Makadaya, which trains and supports young emerging leaders in Indonesia who are committed to addressing urgent social and environmental issues in their communities and across the archipelago through an SIE framework. Bruce serves as a Global Advisor to the Bali Institute.

“The Bali SIE Immersion program helped me let go of an outdated story of myself that I
had been carrying somewhat unconsciously and step into a heroic Story of Self—someone
empowered to serve a larger purpose. The magical culture and people of Bali and the family
we created on the program opened my awareness to a more interconnected world where we
can move beyond our limiting stories of the past, learn from and be inspired by each other`s
newly-authored stories, and collaborate on a revitalized collective Story of Us and Now.”
