What is Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship?
SIE is an emergent, transdisciplinary, adaptive framework for catalyzing, leading, and sustaining systems-level change that links technical and adaptive problem-solving and applies the best thinking, practices, and innovations from across the nonprofit/civic, private, & public sectors.
Why SIE?
Our young change leaders are hungry for the knowledge, skills, and tools that will allow them to effectively address the challenges of the 21st century. They recognize that our old responses to the urgent, complex, and interconnected adaptive challenges we face today are not working. We need a new approach that transcends the current paradigm; one that addresses complex challenges through an interdisciplinary, system-wide framework that integrates technical knowledge and strategies with adaptive leadership and problem-solving. The field of social innovation & entrepreneurship (SIE) provides this framework for achieving transformative, sustainable change. Along with new ways of thinking, SIE offers innovative, empowering tools, strategies, and resources that can be powerfully leveraged through collaborative, sustainable, and scalable SIE Ecosystems.
This dynamic train-the-trainer program will provide university faculty, administrators, and graduate students as well as community-based change leaders and practitioners with the vision and tools to transform their campuses and communities into hubs for social innovation & entrepreneurship. With Bali’s robust SIE ecosystem as our classroom, participants will come away from the experience knowing how to:
- Launch or grow a holistic SIE curricular/co-curricular ecosystem tailored to their campus
- Design immersive, high-impact SIE curriculum that deeply resonates with students.
- Create and facilitate a network of changemakers across their campus and community that leverages and connects forward-thinking leaders, impact organizations, and resources.
- Prepare students to address today’s global challenges by offering transformative SIE study-abroad experiences.
- Empower the next generation of leaders to leverage the best interdisciplinary thinking and innovation to address complex and interrelated social, economic, and environmental issues.
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
- Site visits to social enterprises and high-impact nonprofits. Visit impact-driven enterprises addressing environmental sustainability issues, equitable economic development, women’s empowerment, community and global heath, education access, and more.
- Expand your understanding in Bali’s “living classrooms.” Witness applied social innovation and entrepreneurship in action in villages around Bali, bringing workshop discussions to life and inspiring future lessons for your students.
- Explore traditional markets, Hindu temples, and terraced rice fields. Experience the beauty of Bali and dive deep into its history and cultural traditions.
- Immersive hands-on social innovation experience in a local rural village. Spend a day with a local social enterprise— hear about their goals and participate in a service-learning activity that contributes to their mission.
- Ideate with change leaders from around the world as you craft a vision and strategy for SIE on your campus and in your community using dynamic group processes, guiding templates, and innovative tools and frameworks.
- Dinner with Balinese Royal Family Members: Join the members of the Peliatan Royal Family for a private tour & dinner. This offers a special opportunity to ask questions about Bali’s traditional culture as well as modern-day challenges.
- Snorkel over a coral reef restoration project and visit the resort built around it with the goal of saving the area’s reefs through the civic engagement and economic empowerment of the local population.

Program Price:
- Double Occupancy – $3,575 per person
- Single Supplement – $850
–> If you are not traveling with someone you would like to share a room with, we will pair you with another solo traveler, if no one is available, single room occupancy fee may apply. Each traveler will have their own bed unless you indicate otherwise on your registration.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROGRAM, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- Define and discuss the field of SIE as a holistic, transdisciplinary framework for transformative systems change and articulate best practices in the field of SIE.

- Broadens and deepens students’ perspectives on social and environmental challenges
- Expands students’ perspectives on the potential for SIE to be an effective and sustainable approach to addressing complex challenges

- Emphasizes a “problem first” approach rather than “idea first” approach to addressing challenges
- Allows students to explore a diverse set of issues (such as poverty, health, environment, etc.) through an interdisciplinary lens, with the potential for discovering a new interest/career focus or confirming an existing one.

- Immerses students in a unique culture that offers rich lessons on community, innovation, and the potential for sustainable development.
- Allows students to strengthen the competencies and attributes that are critical to success as a social innovator and entrepreneur, such as empathy, leadership, optimism, grit, resilience, perseverance, creativity, self-awareness, and other aspects of emotional and social intelligence.
- Increases students’ confidence in their own efficacy as they connect theory to practice, apply what they have learned, and help create social value while learning to balance this self-assurance with a sense of humility and a collaborative approach.
- Collaborate with a powerful network of faculty and practitioners to grow and mature their SIE ecosystems, increase the impact they have on—and accelerate the progress of—their students/mentees/colleagues, and make meaningful contributions to the field of SIE.
To be completely honest, being a year out of graduation and reflecting, my participation in these courses changed the entire course of my career and professional life. I am now working for a social enterprise alongside having my own business with future goals to be working in the content creation side of social enterprise, nonprofits, and B corps.

WHY SIE IN BALI?
With its magnificent forested volcanoes, iconic terraced rice fields, teeming coral reefs, and ubiquitous temples, Bali earns its nickname as the “Island of the Gods.” While its ancient Hindu culture continues to thrive, Bali is also a hotbed of impact entrepreneurship—in large part because it is right at a critical turning point in its development: trying to balance tradition and modernity, cultural and environmental sustainability with economic advancement. This blend of tradition and innovation/adaptation offers profound lessons for addressing today’s global challenges, making Bali a uniquely-fitting location to host this program.
Many inspiring social enterprises have been born out of the need to address these growing pains and to give the island’s people the opportunity to adapt and thrive. Bali Institute has developed strong relationships with many of these organizations, and they serve as excellent real-life case studies for designing inspiring curriculum and building SIE ecosystems. In and amongst our workshops and discussions, we’ll weave in inspiring site visits, talks with community leaders, case studies, action research, and immersion opportunities. These dynamic experiences will provide participants with an immersive understanding of social innovation & entrepreneurship (SIE) and how to integrate it into their campuses and communities via a highly-interactive exploration and application of theory and methods.
And finally, Bruce and Bali Institute’s history of collaborative study-abroad programming in Bali provides a powerful example for how to build a successful immersive SIE study-abroad experience for your students and university anywhere in the world. The Bali SIE Immersion program they co-designed and co-led has been included in the Forum for Education Abroad’s Curriculum Toolbox as representative of
best practices in education abroad.
About the Program Leader:
Bruce Manciagli is Co-Founder of the SIE CoLab, a hybrid social enterprise specializing in collaborating with forward-thinking community and/or university-based client-partners seeking to become catalysts and facilitators of sustainable impact, providing them with the scaffolding to build SIE Ecosystems that encompass the hardware, software, and operating system for transformative change.
Bruce’s career has focused on developing the capacity of individuals, organizations, and communities to more effectively address social and environmental challenges and catalyze system transformation. His work in Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship (SIE)—spanning local, state, and international contexts—includes co-founding social enterprises (one of them a national award winner); helping to strengthen and scale a statewide network of high-impact nonprofits; facilitating and funding cross-sector/collective impact partnerships; cultivating SIE ecosystems in higher education and in Indonesia; and leading social innovation initiatives across a diversity of issues, from education to trauma and from civic engagement and youth leadership to fair trade and the environment. Bruce has raised millions and granted tens of millions of dollars to engage communities in creating lasting social value. As Social Entrepreneur in Residence in Florida State University’s (FSU) College of Social Sciences & Public Policy (Interdisciplinary Social Science Program), an affiliated faculty member in FSU’s Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship, and Director of SIE@FSU for seven years, he served as lead architect of FSU’s SIE ecosystem. Based on decades of practice and study in the field of SIE, he articulated and developed the Adaptive SIE Framework for Systems Change, which provides the theoretical framework for the SIE CoLab’s model. He continues to collaborate with colleagues across campus and the community to grow the university’s and Tallahassee’s larger innovation & entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Bruce’s academic training and professional experience are rooted in social innovation & entrepreneurship, international & community development, political theory & interdisciplinary social sciences, and the social foundations of education. It is the latter that compels him to place as much emphasis on how and why people learn as what they learn. He was awarded an FSU Transformation Through Teaching Award in 2017 and a University Teaching Award in 2019.
Bruce has long-standing ties to Indonesia. He grew up overseas, living 18 years across five continents, and first visited Bali as a young boy in 1975—its people, landscape, and culture captivated him. After graduating from Princeton University in 1988, he lived in Salatiga, Java for one year, teaching at Satya Wacana University and exploring this vast archipelago. It was at Satya Wacana that he met his wife, who is from the island of Sumba, where they were married in a traditional ceremony and where his family makes regular trips. Their daughter, who recently graduated from Duke and currently works with Storycraft Lab in Washington DC, is very close with all of her cousins in Indonesia. In partnership with the Bali Institute, he developed and led FSU’s Bali Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship Immersion program, which has been included in the Forum for Education Abroad’s Curriculum Toolbox as representative of best practices in education abroad. In 2019, he partnered with the Bali Institute to prototype and launch the Indonesia Changemakers Fellowship, which laid the foundation for Makadaya, which trains and supports young emerging leaders in Indonesia who are committed to addressing urgent social and environmental issues in their communities and across the archipelago through an SIE framework. Bruce serves as a Global Advisor to the Bali Institute.
